A TEXAN IN GRAY is a story of 19 year old Payton Turner as he sets out from Texas in search of honor and glory with his best friend Thomas to defend his homeland from the invading Union army. He begins to doubt his motives almost from the first day in camp but his commitment to himself and the Southern cause carries him from Etham’s Landing to Appomattox with the 5th Texas Infantry Reg. This story gives the reader a perspective of how all the battles including Gaines Mill, Second Manassas, Antietam, Gettysburg and The Wilderness might have been for a soldier in the famous Hood’s Brigade. It follows the actual events and characters of each battle and draws in those left behind and how they struggled with the weeks and months of not knowing the fate of their husbands, sons and brothers so far from home. The love of Payton’s life, Sarah, waits with those at home for the war to end and as the years drag on, begins to care nothing of the “cause” but only for the safe return of Payton and her brother Thomas.

Expecting the war to last only a year or so, Payton is faced with the reality of the conflicts cost in lives and property. His commitment changes from the Cause to simply standing by and fighting for the men that have become like brothers. In the last dark days after Gettysburg he watches the hopes and dreams of a new nation fade with each battle and the stubborn refusal of some to accept the inevitable. As Richmond falls the struggle becomes one of survival and a burning desire to return to his loved ones and begin to put all he has seen behind him.
