The Wild Place is the story of a psychopath.

Psychopaths aren't necessarily con men, gang members, drug lords, or killers. Some are teachers, lawyers, blue-collar workers, stockbrokers, or politicians. Some are husbands or wives, sons or daughters.

Even people trained in behavioral sciences can be manipulated by wily psychopaths. That's because psychopaths can be so charming, so interesting and entertaining, especially in brief social situations. But in the working world and at home, this facade gives way. That's when the psychopath's true characteristics emerge--especially the urgent need to control others, physically and psychologically, and often, to victimize. Psychopaths are unable to give to others, to form close relationships, to love.

Who are the psychopaths? Think of husbands or wives who keep sole control over family bank accounts and investments, shut their spouses out from key decisions, and cheat on their spouses without remorse. Think of politicians who make unjustified accusations and decisions from a seat of high power, bringing executives to ruin. Think of swindlers like Bernie Madoff. And, sadly, think of little children who torture and kill animals. As a rare, extreme example, think of John Wayne Gacy, "Bozo the Clown," who murdered 32 young men.

The Wild Place is the story of one man, an extreme psychopath, and what can happen when we ignore the signs of psychopathy. I hope that after reading The Wild Place you'll have a better understanding of psychopaths, see through some of their deceptions, and be better able to avoid becoming a victim.
