When a heat wave hits Massachusetts in July 2011, Julie Paxton decides to leave her apartment in Boston and go stay for four weeks with her longtime friend Amy Hatheway. Amy's home is located on Cape Cod. The seashore breezes and cooler temperatures of the Cape will be a pleasant change from the steamy summer conditions of the city. The weather, however, is not the only reason that Julie decides to go to the Cape. The main reason is that Julie needs to spend some time with Amy. The relationship between Amy, age seventy-four, and Julie, age forty-three, is much like that of a mother and a daughter. Wise and loyal, Amy always guides Julie in times of trouble, and right now, Julie does feel troubled.

Ironically, the cause of Julie's distress is the anticipation of the event that should be the happiest one of her life--her wedding. In the fall, Julie is going to marry Arthur, a forty-seven-year-old lawyer who lives and works in Boston. Arthur has become increasingly unreliable as the wedding day approaches. His cavalier attitude has certainly given Julie just cause to feel uneasy about their relationship.

On the day of her arrival on the Cape, Julie meets Paul Cavanaugh, Amy's twenty-eight-year-old nephew who lives in Amy's house. Paul is a carpenter and a writer. In spite of the fifteen-year age difference that exists between them, Julie and Paul quickly become good friends. Together they start to enjoy some of the pleasant pastimes that the Cape has to offer, such as boating and fishing. Little did Julie know that her friendship with Paul, so innocently begun, would entangle her in a web of conflicting human emotions.
