Renew Your Heart: One Heart: You Need Your Heart (And It Needs You) What You Don't Know About Your Heart May Cost You Your Life
by Dr. Hoe Bing Lo M.B.B.S. BBioMed Sc (Hons)
Before we start do me a favor, take your right hand and put it on left chest just below your nipple. Take a breath, what do you notice?
A heartbeat, that is absolutely right.
You might not realize it but you have just found your own internal power plant, your life force if you like.
We know that the heart plays one of the most vital roles in keeping our bodies alive. It pumps life through us and essentially has two main functions: pumping blood to the lungs in order to retrieve oxygen and then pumping that oxygen into blood and transporting it around the rest of our body.
And a healthy heart is no one’s responsibility but your own. Just like no one is going to prevent you from, say, driving recklessly and with abandon, so no one is going to come along and look after your heart for you.
Picture this:
One day Simon, father of two, a husband and a successful businessman, is sitting at work and he receives a dreaded phone call. His father has had a heart attack and has been rushed to hospital. Scenario 1: Simon rushes to hospital only to discover his father has passed away. Simon begins the grieving process and at the same time takes time to think about his own health and how he can change his ways to be healthier.
Now consider scenario 2: Simon’s father survives but he is put onto a cocktail of different medications which make him miserable and seriously affect the quality of his life. In witnessing his father’s misery; constant doctor visits and examination; Simon needs to decide if he will carry on as he is or make changes to ensure he lives a healthier and happier life.
