Successful detective novelist Michael Herring has a secret that he lies about: his writing process. While cameras roll and fans look on with adulation, Herring professes that he simply writes the first image that comes to mind. However, when in his writing room that transforms from a warm, cozy, carpeted, white room to a drab cement room, he, in actuality, listens to someone, a detective, from an alternative universe recount occurrences from the previous day.

Wanting to escape his doomed environment, Detective Moorgan Pentulity gives the author a proposition, one that cannot be changed: swap places—Herring goes to the detective's crime-ridden world where fantasy is reality, and Pentulity to Herring's where he will excise the cancerous growth of moral corruption pervading it.


Herring must now deal with this existential threat while repairing his relationship with best friend Frank Dodorsky who had been nearly voided their friendship because of the novelist's reclusiveness and aloofness.
