How To Maximize Your KDP Select Free Days

Wondering how to maximize your KDP Select promo days? Wanting to use your time in the best possible ways while preparing for your promo? If so, this article is for you!

How Many Days To Run Your Promo

This is a topic of fierce debate. While some claim that running your promo for 5 days straight is best, some people say that performing five 1 day promos is more effective. In my mind, every author and every book is different, so every author will see different results. However, I am going to show you what has worked best for me and my books, time and time again.

I strongly believe that two day promos are most effective. I have several books (two non-fiction, one fiction) and in my opinion two day promos generate way more downloads than any other possible combination.
However, since KDP Select only gives you 5 days you either have to do two 2 day promos and one 1 day promo, or one 2 day and one 3 day. So, what should you do? Should you do two 2 day promos and one 1 day? Or one two day and one three day? (In my mind those are the only two combinations that should really be taken into consideration, even though there are numerous other options.) What I would recommend is that you try both of the above combinations, keep track of the results, and then determine which one was most effective!

What To Do To Maximize Your Promo

The first time I ever ran a free promo, the only thing I did to get the word out was write a blog post.

Big mistake.

I didn't realize it at the time, but there are a multitude of ways that you can get the word out about your promotion. The following are a list of things I do to before a promo:

~ Submit your book to sites that list free ebooks. There are literally hundreds of sites that will advertise your book during its free promo. Free Book Dude is one of them. For a list of the most effective sites to list your book on, visit http://www.authormarketingclub.com, sign up for a free account and then navigate to the “Free Book Submission Tool”. This is one of the most useful tools available for those who are preparing for a free promo.

~ Create A Blog Post
If you own a website or blog, make sure to send out a post about your book going free. This step is really quite straight forward so I won't discuss it any longer here.

~ Send An Email To Your Mailing List
If you own a mailing list or online newsletter, make sure to send a message about your free book to your subscribers. If you have provided them with valuable content in the past, your subscribers will be 99% more likely to download your book than the average internet user. So, don't miss out on this opportunity.

~ Email Your Contacts
Just navigate to the page in your email account where your contacts are stored, select those who you think would be interested in your book and send out a single email alerting them of the freebie.

~ Schedule Tweets
Using a free service like Hootsuite, schedule tweets to go out hourly during each day of your promotion. Because of Twitter's viral effect you can generate quite a few downloads this way. (Note: you can also schedule posts to go out on Facebook, although I recommend focusing on Twitter first.)

After carrying out the actions recommended above, you should be in pretty good shape. By following these very same steps, some authors have been able to generate tens of thousands of downloads. Tens of thousands!
