Dark times are upon the land of Nereth. Centuries have passed since the rightful heir to the kingdom was banished. An evil ruler sits on the throne. The people are losing hope in ancient legend, which prophesies of one who will rise up, overthrow the king, and restore peace.
Like all others in Nereth, Edlyn has suffered greatly. Orphaned as a child, Edlyn grew up as a serf on the manor of a self-indulgent, drunken lord. Now a spirited seventeen-year-old, Edlyn works to buy her freedom, while fighting off the unwanted advances of the wicked Sheriff Hurst.
But everything changes the morning Edlyn finds a young man hiding in the stable, inflicted with a sword wound that will surely be fatal if she does not help him. Moments later, Sheriff Hurst arrives, hunting the stranger. In a split-second decision, Edlyn hides the young man from Sheriff Hurst and begins nursing him back to health.
After the young man's strength returns under Edlyn's care, he tells her that his name is Maddock. And soon, it is Maddock who comes to Edlyn's aid, daringly rescuing her from Sheriff Hurst. Forced to flee for their lives, Edlyn and Maddock escape to Ravenshire Forest and the desolate mountains beyond.
Suddenly outlaws on the run from Sheriff Hurst and the king, Edlyn and Maddock begin to discover that their meeting may have been due to more than chance, for their lives prove bound by an incredible fate that neither of them could have imagined.
