The story centers on Jeb Hayes, the most successful landowner in the town and his journey to break the Curse of Ham, by abandoning his white wife, and taking a recently purchased slave with grieving green eyes as his wife. Jeb believes that by producing a baby with her he will be able to atone for the sins of his past.
