Sea Stirred
by Caroline Williams
Dreamy, secretive Martha, used to being the odd one out, is intending to spend her holiday with her extended family keeping well out of the way of her exuberant cousins and enjoying her own company. This year though, on the Cornish coast, she meets Alaric, an outsider in his dysfunctional family, and for the first time she begins to open up.
The story is told from the perspective of both Martha and her mother, Cassie, who finds her daughter very difficult to understand, and who is trying to write a novel but finding that one of the characters is taking on a life of its own.
This is the story of how that summer week in Cornwall stirs Martha forever, and how she finally begins to realise where she fits in, with both Alaric and Cassie. It's for any parent who doesn't understand their offspring, any teenager whose parents are a complete mystery to them, and it's also for anyone who has travelled the road to Cornwall with rising anticipation.
Mostly, though, it's for anyone who remembers the excitement, the anguish and the microscopic intensity of their first relationship. And if you don't remember, this will bring it back . . . .
