Adam is 18, lazy, and manipulative. He used to be a loving, devoted, boy, until his dad died at the age of 38, on September 11, 2001; but not because of the Towers. After that, his mother found an angry, abusive alcoholic to marry, and Adam turned inward, losing any empathy and learning cunning and trickery. Now his stepdad has tossed him out, on a Saturday, and he can think of nowhere to go. For years he’s wanted Death; but he has never pushed himself to complete that process.
Summer is 16, semi-orphaned, a street child, and bulimic. She meets Adam at the first dive he comes to, and even though they are constantly at each other’s throats, there is a definite bond. Can’t live with, can’t stay away. They go through a series of crash pads, a little food, a little drug use, a lot of argument. Eventually Summer points out to Adam that they are dead, and invisible to others. He doesn’t go for it. So of course he has to go prove that for himself.
I had a lot of difficulty finding any character with which to empathise in this book. Even the few upscale individuals didn’t really seem purposeful or intent. Certainly Adam and Summer are psychological messes, and yes, with their backgrounds, they might have reason to be; but a lot of their bad choices they went to on their own.
