It begins with a bad dream: a Nightmare in the mind of a kitten who’s part of a legendary line of Dreamers—animals who have the power to see the future along with a whole set of other powers and burdens. Soon the dream is realized as the kitten and her friends, a horse and a dog, find themselves haunted by the mysterious disappearances of other animals in their homeland called the Valleys. Their fears grow as winter draws near. When they too are captured, it solves the mystery of the vanishings but opens up a whole new realm of questions.

The trio finds themselves in the possession of human doctors, and they and other animals are turned into morphers, doomed to live dual lives as humans and animals. They live in a glass dome called the Habitat and are taught English and other human knowledge and customs. The doctors also give them names based on Greek gods; the cat is dubbed Aphrodite. As she struggles to adjust to her new, shifting form, she fights against dark dreams, memories of family, and the haunting guilt of the past.

The morphers are forced to fight daily in the Training Room, hinting at the humans’ sinister plans for them. Once the plans are revealed, Aphrodite and her two friends from the Valleys flee along with Apollo, a wolf morpher she developed a friendship within the Habitat—and who’s suffered years of abuse from the doctors and other morphers. Along their cross-country journey, Aphrodite struggles to discern what her Dreaming abilities, and the advice and admonishment of the original Dreamer who appears to her in dreams, mean in her present state.

Just as conflict threatens to disband the runaways, they run into a face from the past who offers them a new way of life. Now Aphrodite and her friend face a new, foreign challenge: high school. It’s here to Aphrodite has to battle her confusing feelings for Apollo once and for all. But before her catlike mind can comprehend the mysteries of love, her persistent dream gets clearer—and it spells her doom.

In the end, it seems the further she gets from her past, the more it creeps up to find her. In a battle against Fate itself, Aphrodite combines her powers, instincts, and knowledge as a Dreamer, a cat, and a human to save her friends and triumph in ways she never would have imagined. Her victory brings her many things, but most of all it gives her the opportunity to craft her own identity for the very first time.

As the first in a trilogy, Nightmares of a Dreamer starts an incredible saga.
