What is physiology and why do I care? Some universities have removed physiology from their curriculum, because students and teachers felt it was too hard a course. However, entrance into healthcare professional training programs usually requires that students complete credits for some form of human physiology course.
This book is the first in a series designed to help students get their mind around physiology. These books provide a basic framework for understanding human physiology. Each is written for persons with no previous exposure to scientific jargon.
Most physiology courses start with a very brief introduction to chemistry. But, it is difficult for beginners to get the relevance of that information to learning physiology.
Chemistry in chemistry class appears different than chemistry in physiology, because the human body operates at an almost constant temperature. In chemistry lab if you want to get a reaction started you either add or subtract heat. To get around the problem of constant body temperature, human physiology is fine-tuned and custom-designed in its use of chemistry’s principles.
Physiology: Custom-Designed Chemistry will answer the following and more:
• How do bonds in molecules form?
• What is that mysterious stuff called molecular energy?
• What is water chemistry?
• How and why is neutral blood pH maintained?
• What is a semi-permeable membrane?
• What is osmotic pressure and why does it matter?
• How does hydrostatic pressure differ from osmotic pressure?
• How can gaseous oxygen and carbon dioxide flow in opposite directions during breathing?
• What do body fluids have to do with nerve cell function?
Many authors of textbooks for human physiology are overwhelmed by the amount of new information about this science that arrives almost daily. Physiology is far from a “finished science” as many like to call anatomy. For example, since I was a graduate student, the complete human gene sequence has been revealed, and now our immune system is no longer the black box it was then.
Yet, the basic principles on which physiology is established have not changed over the course of my 30 year long career as a physiologist. Ten years from now details about how living systems survive will expand exponentially, but the basic chemical framework of physiology will continue to remain the same.
In this series of small books, about 100 pages each, I will elaborate on the enduring fundamentals of physiology. Reading this first book will help you understand just how closely human physiology is aligned with the environment available on planet Earth. I am hoping when you finish it that you will know the answer to “What is physiology and why do I care?
