Excerpt from STONE FACE:
The gutter that fed the little gargoyle was jammed with debris – twigs, leaves, and a burbling mud. As Alesia leaned over the edge of the building, she cast a glance at the street far below, and reeled from vertigo.
But as she regained her balance and turned to leave, her attention again became riveted to the little gargoyle. She found herself reaching through the stone spires, grabbing at the twigs and leaves and muck, throwing them from the gutter, reaching farther and farther, into the creature's throat, towards his mouth, grabbing and thrusting, unable to even see what she was accomplishing, just digging, digging, digging, until, suddenly, a great inhalation of wind flung her backwards onto the roof.
She landed, sprawling, gasping for air, soaking wet, fingernails broken, blood from her fingers mixing with the downpour and running onto the gravelly floor of the roof. She held her hand in front of her face watching the blood flow....
