Arrowheads
by Garden Urthark
On this particular morning, we wake with Landon to a special day in his life. He is to meet a girl. Who is she? A mysterious and beautiful girl who works at her father’s gas station in Boone, Colorado.
Landon has a full day ahead of him to get through before he is to meet her. Which he begins with a good farm breakfast at a table heaped with eggs, sausage, pancakes, pitchers of fresh milk, and cups of hot coffee.
The year is 1972 and Landon, who has only recently graduated from high school, is spending the summer on the 4,000-acre ranch and farm of his mother’s cousins not far from Pueblo.
We go with him to feed calves, bail hay, deliver a 4010 tractor, and load up a hay truck on what is for him an ordinary day under the big sky of the Colorado high plains.
Will Landon choose to start a new life in Colorado or return to his home state of Maryland where he is scheduled to start college in the fall? The decision, it would seem, all depends on what happens with the girl.
Exploring in the mountains one day, Landon finds a whole pile of Indian arrowheads. Are they real? What should he do with them? And what about the girl? A boy, a dream, and a reality converge in this story where fate has the last featuring blow at events.
