This is a MUST READ!! From the first page through the end I could not put the book down. Louis Aguayo

This book was a very engaging memoir covering particularly relevant issue in our society today--that of child abuse and bullying. - Paul R Mittleman

The insight of what a child goes through and has to keep locked inside of himself is shocking! I was wide-eyed one moment and smiling at the familiar family references which I know many can relate to the next moment! - Gina

Excerpt from Write Up in Windy City Times:

As a 9-year-old, Patrick Dati's life changed forever when serial killer John Wayne Gacy raped him in the men's bathroom of the now defunct Goldblatt's department store on a winter morning in January 1972.

It took Dati, who is openly gay, 35 years to reveal this information; he details that event as well as other events that have shaped his life in his debut book, I Am Me: Survivor of Child Abuse and Bullying Speaks Out.

The genesis of the book began about six years ago when Dati's psychiatrist suggested that he write his thoughts down in a diary so he could release therapeutically what he'd gone through. Dati started writing the diary; then about three-and-a-half years ago his best friend and mentor Bob, who is a writer, asked to read and review his diary. About three weeks later Dati got together with Bob, who insisted that Dati's story would be a New York Times bestseller that would help save lives if he turned his diaries into a book.

Meet Patrick Dati

Patrick Dati grew up in a devout Catholic family on the northwest side of Chicago. His father was Italian and his mother, Irish. He was the youngest of five children, three boys and two girls. His family lived the dreams of most middle class families in the 1960’s and 70s. At the age of 9, Patrick’s life took a dramatic change as a result of a horrifying and traumatic event that affected the rest of his life: he was raped by notorious serial killer John Wayne Gacy in the men’s room of a department store on a winter morning. Fear from the rapist’s threat to track him down and kill him and his family if he spoke a word about the rape to anyone kept him silent about the event for 35 years.

Patrick has now broken his silence and has written a memoir about the abuse and bullying he endured from an older brother throughout his childhood and adult life. I Am Me is also a torturous coming out story of a man raised in the midst of a devout Catholic family whose members he loved and spent years trying to please by realizing their dreams for him. He attempted suicide twice, and found freedom and himself one day in three simple words: “I have survived.”

In living to please others, Patrick married twice and today is the proud father of a beautiful and loving 15 year old daughter. Recently, he met a man he loves and is now sharing his life with his partner. Because of the life he lived, Patrick is now an advocate for several organizations devoted to preventing childhood abuse and bullying. He is available as a public speaker to help victims of abuse and bullying.

Patrick graduated with a BA in Broadcast Communications from Columbia College in Chicago. He has spent the last decade as a marketing professional working in the book publishing industry. Most of his writing consists of newsletters, promotional copy, and website content to sell books for publishing companies.
