Why I Write What I Write

There are many, many genres out there, and even more books, weighing on bookshelves. Some people prefer to write romance and some enjoy reading sci-fi, others refuse to read children’s literature and the remnant doesn't even want to hear of erotica, let alone read it.

I think there are a variety of different reasons why that is, the main one being that all people are raised in different surroundings, situations and with different parents and friends. Some got bullied in childhood, some were bullies, some were good at sports, others were good at studying, some people prioritize money and some happiness…You get the point.

As for me, I was lucky enough to have both a very simple and then a fulfilling upbringing. I've seen difficulty in life, but I’ve also seen the other side of the coin. I grew up around a lot of kids, with numerous toys and great parents. My experience as a boarder in Swiss schools gave me a feel of independence, what with being far away from home for months on end. I got to try a lot of different things and meet all kinds of interesting people – which is the exact reason why the characters in my books often travel the globe and make new friends.

So, this takes us to the next step. My books, which are either young-adult, fantasy or sci-fi for the most part, are all a reflection of what I've seen. I’m not only talking about the lessons life’s taught me, but also all the movies and cartoons I've watched, clothes I've worn, music I've listened to. Of course, very often, the protagonists in my books have nothing in common with me whatsoever, but they might be an amalgamation of this and that. They might act a certain way or say one thing or another because I once witnessed something similar to it happen, be it on screen or in life. So, to sum it all up, I write what I write because I am who I am. Just like every person is unique, so is every writer, which is the exact reason why I love reading new authors. One gets to discover uncharted territory and new worlds.
