Failure to Thrive
by Mike Pinches

Christine Pearson is an angry teenager who storms from her home after another fight with her mother. She was once a sweet girl but years of neglect coupled with the scars of her parent’s divorce have molded her into an unbalanced and self-destructive adolescent. Her mother, Stacy, reports the incident to the police but their response is apathetic and they dismiss Christine as “just another dramatic teenager.” Fearing that Christine was abducted, Stacy turns to the local media and pleads for the community to step forward to help her find her daughter.

The only man to respond is Marcus Baker, an estranged friend of the family who is also a young and disillusioned investigator in New Jersey’s Child Protection Services. The only lead he has is a rumor that Christine is abusing drugs and somewhere within the inner-city streets of Paterson, NJ. Marcus senses that something else is amiss and speculates that Christine has a secret agenda beyond simply running away from her mother. Suspecting that she has put herself in immense danger, Marcus hastens his search and uses every resource and contact to find her trail. As he inches closer to her, he discovers that his allies are turning against him including those in the police department, the Child Protection Services agency and even his own brother. In time, his friendly offer to assist in the search devolves into a panicked obsession to learn the truth behind Christine’s disappearance and to bring her home before she is lost forever.
