Kiss and Tell
by TJ Cooke
'Kiss and Tell' is a highly original crime fiction thriller by experienced TV drama scriptwriter TJ Cooke.
It introduces us to Jill Shadow, a criminal lawyer who has overcome a traumatic past. Forget every lawyer stereotype you've ever come across, because Jill certainly breaks the mould...
As an 18-year-old she fell pregnant to her boyfriend at the time, the mischievous Jimmy Briscoe, who, unbeknown to her, was into large-scale drug dealing. When Jimmy received a lengthy jail term, Jill was left with five month old baby Hannah to look after.
Eventually recovering from the shock, this single mother from a rough London estate buried herself in her work. Balancing professional learning with parental care, Jill worked her way up the ladder, from secretary, to legal executive to fully qualified lawyer.
Having ostracised Jimmy from her life, Jill eventually told Hannah an entirely different story about her father's background, whilst also keeping her past hidden from bosses and professional colleagues.
We now join Jill twelve years later... with her ex Jimmy about to be released from his lengthy jail term.
Imminent danger has seen Jill transferred to a safe house, with news that her daughter is missing, possibly abducted from school.
Jill reckons that two recent events are key to solving the mystery behind her daughter's sudden disappearance. One is surely the release of her ex Jimmy, but the other could be her recent involvement in the curious case of Bella Kiss, an Anglo-Hungarian drug smuggler.
Bella's been arrested at London Heathrow, with a kilo of heroin strapped around her in a girdle. She claims to have been working as an informer for a detective, someone Jill is keen to speak to, as he should be able to vouch for her client. But when the officer proves impossible to trace, and Jill is stalked by the mysterious 'suited man', she realises she's becoming entangled in a darker world altogether...
...What's more, Jimmy has now muddied the waters, by suggesting that he has vital background information on a major drugs cartel... the same cartel that Bella Kiss claims has been forcing her to import drugs.
Jill knows that somehow Jimmy really is connected to the Bella Kiss case, but has he been telling her the truth, or is he just snaring Jill into a trap, by way of revenge, for not being allowed contact with his daughter...?
Jill always knew that one day she would have to confront her past, Now she has to do so by judging Jimmy far more acutely than she could ever have imagined. Either he's responsible for the threats to her life, and her daughter's disappearance, or he's genuinely trying to help her escape from more sinister antagonists.
Make the wrong call and Jill risks losing everything and everyone she's ever cared about... as she steps ever deeper into a world of phenomenal drug dealing, money laundering and murder.
'Kiss and Tell' is described as 'an inventive take on the crime fiction genre',
'a crime thriller with soul' and 'a real page turner'. Some have commented that the narrative drags you in so well that you might just try and read this book all in one go...
