Sam is devastated when her partner, Ben, has an affair. Going to confront the woman Ben cheated with, Rachel, she instead meets Rachel’s husband, Tim. Sam and Tim have something in common. Both are hurt, and shocked, and not sure how to put their lives back together. Sam asks Tim to sleep with her, to pay Ben and Rachel back, and Tim offers her a beer instead.
Deciding a friend might be as good as a lay, Sam accepts.
A friendship starts right then. A friendship of two hurt, desperate people with nowhere left to go. They have a lot in common. Being cheated on and pushed into corners and made to leave people they loved. She and Tim need each other.
And Tim has a farm, and Sam likes the farm. Being there gets her out the house. Staying with Tim, Sam begins to heal. Along the way, she learns about bugs and mice and frozen pipes and dirt roads, and the unexpected pleasure that a move to the countryside can bring.
Grey Jack Road is about the end of relationships, about living the consequences of other people’s actions, and about coming to terms with unexpected and undeserved pain. It is a story about tenderness and support and how these things can be as strong as romantic love.
