"For Love or Loyalty" follows a young woman named Pauline, who works as a servant to nobility during the French Revolution. She is content with life in her master's home, earning modest wages and having bread at every meal when so many others are hungry. She further enjoys the visits paid to her by the passionate Jean, an apprentice at the local printing shop. As a member of the working class, Pauline has no knowledge of government, nor any thought as to how it functions. She quickly learns more than she cares to, however, when the current environment begins to shift from reformatory to revolutionary.
What began as a call for financial reform develops into full-blown riots. Amongst the rabble, Pauline finds herself ensconced in situations she never imagined: keeping secrets, plotting escapes, and perhaps engaging in treason along the way. She tells herself that she must be honorable, but it is difficult when everyone around her has a different idea of honor. As the national crisis continues to escalate toward war, Pauline finds her circumstances becoming more and more desperate. In the end, she must make the decision between her relationships with others and her loyalty to her country.
Lives are lost, love is found, and heads are chopped off in this fictional piece inspired by one of the bloodiest revolts in human history.
