Larger Than Life

I recently re-read Shadowfever. The hero is Jericho Barrons. Now, some hate him with a deep, dark passion that burns hotter than a thousand suns. But, he's introduced in the series by the way a character says his name with reverence. And, I have to say, even if you hate him, he's lived up to that introduction.

And that just makes me think of all my favorite heroes.

Tucker Longstreet: Honestly, he's the first fictional hero that made my heart go pitter-patter. I'm going to be honest, I have a thing for charmers and he is the epitome of charming.

Lord Minstrom: I don't think there's anything harder than making the bad guy the hero. But, Kate Pearce manages to do just that. Unequivocally, he's the bad guy, yet, when I get his POV I understand why he is the way he is. I can't help but cheer him on and wish he gets his own HEA. Of course, when it's the bad boy's turn, I can't help but love seeing him tamed.

And...believe it or not, Beast from “Beauty and the Beast.” I know. A cartoon character makes this list. But as an author I cannot lift my nose at good characterization, especially when it comes to heroes. But, you've got a man for all intents and purposes that has a dark past. He's in pain. He needs something, someone to ground him and make his larger than life personality enigmatic. Despite his earlier beliefs, he wants, needs to make things right for the people around him.

Harry Dresden: Now, I know he's out of my wheelhouse as far as a romance hero is concerned. But, I'm sorry, he's just the one. He's been beaten down. He's been outsmarted. He's had his very low moments, but you have to cheer this man on for stubbornly persevering. I add him to this list for the simple fact, I'd love to see him finally get his happily ever after. I secretly hope Murphy becomes the love of his life, but I'm biased.

Spike: I'm going to be honest here...I have a thing for James Marsters. Related to above, he reads the Dresden series. But, he's best known as the crazy, emo vampire from Buffy. He's bad. He's good. He's cracked in the head. Juicy characterization here. I have to say, he's  my fav on this list.

Seriously. Swoon.

Who are you favorite heroes?

Bio:

Melissa Blue’s writing career started on a typewriter one month after her son was born. This would have been an idyllic situation for a writer if it had been 1985, not 2004. Eventually she upgraded to a computer. She’s still typing away on the same computer, making imaginary people fall in love.

Two months have passed since Nicole Harrison’s weekend of forbidden pleasure. It should have been more than enough time for Nicole to forget Sebastian’s charming smiles and wicked kisses. Except, during those nights together, she managed to leave behind her driven lifestyle as a publicist and took what she wanted, experiencing freedom and the wild abandon of their reckless agreement of no last names, no shared details. And the woman she was with him is the hardest part to erase from her memory.

Unfortunately, one detail was tantamount—Sebastian Clark is a publicist and now he’s gunning for her job.

Sebastian never allows himself to get tangled in knots by a woman, and, yet, he can’t stop dreaming about Nicole’s silky thighs and ripe lips, how she'd shuddered under his touch. He doesn’t need a woman who is more of a shark than he when it comes to PR, except he’s seen every, single soft inch of her. Now they’ll have to work side by side and somehow ignore what feels like unfinished business.

Will the weekend they spent together turn out to be more than they could have ever imagined, or will past hurts and career ambitions stand in their way? Only Cupid knows...

Excerpt:

“You're cocky.”
“You should know.” His voice had gone husky without provocation.
Her teeth sank into the side of her mouth, pursing full lips. She straightened. “I do. Never doubt that.” She made a sound full of contemplation. “Your confidence will be your Achilles' heel. You think because you know something, you know everything.”
“I'm not new at this.”
“No, you're not. At least not from the way you conducted yourself. But that doesn't mean you can't learn more tricks of the trade. ”
He hoped, like hell, they had stopped talking about the client. Then common sense prevailed and shot down the idea. He and Nicole had to work closely together. What happened once could never happen again. The only reason he had the urge to play this game was to prove himself to Anna and her publicity manager. Nothing else. Nothing more.
“I could say the same.”
A smile, slow and seductive, curved her lips. “What's the prize?”
“A coveted contact.” He had more than a few she'd salivate over, and after seeing her schmooze Jeremiah, he knew she had a few he'd want.
“Then you're on, Sebastian. May the best publicist win.”

  1. I love this story. My favorite hero is Gideon Green from "Vampire Mistress" by Joey Hill. Sebastian is one of my new favorites too.
