If you've never lived through a hurricane, and even if you have, you might like this essay about life in Key West during the most active hurricane seasons on historical record. The back-to-back hurricane seasons of 2004 and 2005 broke all kinds of historical records and left damages in the multiple billions across Florida and the Southeastern U.S. Key West saw many of those storms pass close by its shores and felt the effects of others, including Frances, Jeanne, Ivan, Katrina and Wilma.
Floods, evacuations, business closures, road blocks and finding fish in trees and boats in the road were just a matter of course in Key West those summers, but it wasn't all bad. There were lessons to be had from those storms, too, and ways to go on living in a place that might be blown away before your eyes.
