Guest Post from 'Grimm' Writer Akela Cooper

Akela Cooper is a busy woman. Not only is she a well-known indie horror author, she helps pay her bills by writing on the hit NBC supernatural detective show Grimm. We are lucky to have her take a few minutes out of a busy day and write down some thoughts on her twisted writing with us for our October Horror Event.

What if you could see something no one else can? What if you discovered one day you had the ability to see the real monsters that lurk just under the surface of seemingly normal people? And that it was your duty to hunt them down and stop them. That’s the case for Detective Nick Burkhardt. He’s a Grimm, which also happens to be the show I write for!

Hi, my name is Akela Cooper, and for as long as I can remember, I’ve been a sick, twisted fuck. I’m also a lucky fuck, in that I get to be paid for doing the thing I love: writing. I’m currently a Story Editor on NBC’s “Grimm” (that’s just a fancy title for a series writer). In the two seasons I’ve written for Grimm I’ve learned a lot, especially what’s permissible by Standards and Practices (head falling on the floor is okay, seeing the actual decapitation is not). I also have the privilege of collaborating with an awesome group of fellow writers, whereas most of the time, I’m sequestered away and left to my devices. It’s also very cool to see a group of talented actors bring to life the words I put on paper. I write, they take my words and make them awesome and I satisfy my god complex. It’s win-win. Where were we? Oh yeah. Working in television is the kindergarten equivalent of learning to play well with others. There are plenty of challenges writing for television but it also allows you to be more creative in how you get your scares across. And I do love to get my scares across.

But whenever I feel the need to describe a vivisection as graphically as I damn well please, I can go back to my first love: prose fiction. It is here I can unleash my not-so-inner sick fuck without a corporate head worried about offending Ma and Pa Middle America. I’ve had a few short stories like, Tinder Box Blues and Mr. Peepers published through Biting Dog Press, available on Amazon.com for download to your Kindle or iPad. Quickly, enrich your life. Go buy them.

As you can see, I’m well equipped to deliver your scares in both television and print. If you’re interested, be sure to check them out!
