Dégagé: Poems by Michael Horan
by Michael Horan
DÉGAGÉ is a stirring volume of poetry to say the least. Its opening lines sound out a delicate lyricism that is not lost throughout the remainder of the work:
Part of time is growing old in the now:
The other, becoming young in what's past:
Part Spring, part salt of the earth.
("Dégagé" 1-3)
Powerful images also fill the volume:
It was when we refrained from the taking,
Holding our arms still like hollow gloves--
Loves with no object to view an apex.
Stasis, you have your mystic sojourns.
("We Partial Ones" 5-8)
In all, the volume's singular arrangement as a five act play, whose cast is a variety of moods, attitudes, images, and compelling turns of phrase, lends coherence and unity to an otherwise far-ranging endeavor.
