"She closed the book, placed it on the table, and finally, decided to walk through the door. Serendipity was going to meet her great uncle, the great uncle whose wife she was named after. The great uncle’s house was by a marsh, and Serendipity was standing on the whitewashed porch fiddling with the books on the hardwood coffee table. She opened and closed one, fidgeting with its quickly cut pages and playing with the dark leather binding. She was thirteen years old, shy, and nervous about her first meeting with this relative.

'Ser!' her Da called again from inside, beckoning for her to come meet great uncle Crom. She jumped, startled, and cursed before stumbling towards Crom’s room.

The screen door squealed on its hinges and a deep happy scratchy voice greeted her as she entered the bright room."
