What is Human Echolocation?: An Emerging Mobility Concept for the Blind
by Tim Johnson
Echolocation is the method of interpreting the sound of a click to "see" your surroundings in 3 dimensions. "Non-visual images" can be created in your mind with diligent practice and understanding of this skill to give blind people a level of independence that may seem impossible. Sighted people can also learn this skill as echolocation offers information above and beyond vision itself.
It’s not hocus pocus nor does it require special abilities or even years of training. Humans, even YOU, can learn to interpret echoes and sound reverberations to see the world around them with surprisingly little training. Musicians know this effect as "reverb" and with practice it can be refined into a mode of perception that you will never understand without first experiencing.
Objects from very large to very small can be detected, and this technique can be used to orient oneself and navigate through complex and foreign environments. This can offer independence, confidence and a whole new lease on life to many blind people. It can offer an enlightening view of human potential for all others interested in learning more about this unique and very real ability.
